The Central Institute of Indian Languages was set up on 17th July 1969 with a view to assisting and co-ordinating the development of Indian languages. The Institute is charged with the responsibility of serving as a nucleus to bring together all the research and literary output from the various linguistic streams to a common head and narrowing the gap between the basic research and developmental research in the field of languages and linguistics in India.

The Institute also runs seven Regional Language Centres in the various linguistic regions of the country to help and meet the demand for trained teachers to implement the three-language for trained teachers to implement the three-language formula and assurance to the linguistic minorities.

The publications will include materials produced by the members of the staff of the Central Institute of Indian Languages and its Regional Languages Centres and associated scholars from universities and institutions both Indian and foreign.

The present volume, Dimensions of Applied Linguistics, which is a collection of articles by Prof. R. N. Srivastava and Dr. R. S. Gupta, discusses the problems of literacy in multilingual settings, problems of organizing language teaching in multilingual-pluricultural countries of Southeast Asia, and the relationship between language and literature (as discourse), and covers various areas of linguistic application such as language pedagogy, lexicography, translation, sign language and artificial languages in three sections: Literacy and Language Education, Linguistics and Literary Studies, and Widening Horizons.

The Institute has brought out this volume for the benefit of the scholars in the field of applied linguistics and to get interest of the other scholars in the study of applied linguistics. The authors deserve appreciation for bringing their various articles into this present form. I congratulate all those who worked together and with coordination for the production of this book. I hope, the readers will fond this book useful.
