FOREWORD

The book 'Hindi Drills and Exercises' published in 1968 brought the highest encomium that any author may wish, a letter of appreciation from a discerning reader. Ivan Illich, who wanted to study Hindi, shifted statement that he had not found a book prepared with so much affection brought home to me that a good book of drills and exercise can be a motivating factor as well as a helpful aid in learning a language.

Ever since the establishment of Regional Language Centres of the Central Institute of Indian Languages in 1970 we have been conducting experiments about the methodics of second languages teaching/learning. This volume on Drills and Exercise embodies in it fifteen years experience in the field.

From a language specific book of drills and exercise to a book on Drills and Exercise maps the distance covered by the field in India. Drills and exercise evaluate given here are illustrative. The principles can be used for designing similar drills, exercise and help formulate objective tests in all Indian languages.

If language teachers, teacher educators, material producers and language evaluators find the book useful, our efforts would be rewarded. I congratulate all those involved in the preparation and production on the book.
