The
Central Institute of Indian Languages was set up on 17th July 1969 with a view
to assisting and co-ordinating the development of Indian languages. The Institute
is charged with the responsibility of serving as a nucleus to bring together all
the research and literary output from the various linguistic streams to a common
head and narrowing the gap between basic research and development research in
the field of languages and linguistics in India.
The Institute also runs seven Regional Language Centres in the various linguistic
regions of the country to help meet the demand for trained teachers to implement
the three language formula.

The publications of the Institute include materials produced by the members of
the staff of the Central Institute of Indian Languages and its regional Language
Centres and associated scholars from universities and institutions both Indian
and foreign.

The present volume, Language, Education and Culture, which is a collection of
papers by Dr. D. P. Pattanayak, the former 'Director of the Institute, consists
of 33 articles, and discusses various aspects and problems of languages, education
and culture in a multilingual country like India. If this book helps in developing
a greater understanding of the development and use of language in education and
culture in the country, our efforts would be amply rewarded.
