The National Seminar on 'Methodology of Literacy Material Preparation', jointly organized by the Directorate of Adult Education and the Central Institute of Indian Language, was held in Mysore from the 3rd to 5th August 1978. The objective was to pool the experiences from the field and insights from different disciplines in order to develop certain theoretical bases for the preparation of literacy materials in the context of NAEP. Linguists, educationists field workers, and presented papers on various aspects of literacy. It is quite fortunate that a large number of linguists have gathered at one place for the first time to discuss the linguistic aspects of literacy. The papers project a wide spectrum of ideas and opinions drawn from several disciplines and experiences. There has been a long felt need for theoretical guidelines for the benefit of the field workers and organizers of literacy programmes. The present volume op papers, being the first of its kind in our country in this particular field, would, I am sure, go a long way in fulfilling that need.

I take this opportunity to thank Dr. A. K. Jalaluddin and Dr. D. P. Pattanayak for their support and guidance. I thank prof. R. N. Srivastava for many valuable suggestions regarding editorial policy. I am particularly indebted to Mrs.R.S.Shafi and Mr.K.B.Rege of the Directorate of Adult Education for their kind cooperation and help. I thank the writers for their cooperation in sending me the revised versions of their papers in time.
