Makes a distinction between the esoteric written culture and the exoteric oral culture. He suggests that literacy education should teach the control of written medium and not just written skills since literacy is participation in the world of written culture.

Curricula and Materials for Adult Literacy : A Plea for Prefessionalism

Point out the artificiality and non-authenticity of literacy primers. The words used in the primers represent language not communication, vocabulary bit not thought. A small number of selected words can effectively replace a much larger number of random ones. They plead for the preparation of care materials by a contralised agency headed by language planners and material producers.

Define reading skill as an ability to extract the underlying structure of sentences from the visual information. Reading can and should be taught as a visual skill enabling the reader to analyse written sentences into their fundamental psychologcal structure directly without auditory intervention.

Symbolisation of Alphabet for an Unwritten Langauge


The considerations for the choice of a script from which the alphabet for an Unwritten language is drawn are largely social and educational. So are the Modifications necessary on the script to suit the phonemic inventary of the unwritten
language. These considerations recommend the use of the script of the official language of the state in which the unwritten language spoken. The principles of modification of this script and the relevance of writing of the unwritten language are discussed. The need for experimental research to answer certain questions of choice
from among the competing solutions is also pointed out.(The paper was also submitted to the Journal of Indian Linguistics)
