Our first and foremost thanks are due to Dr. D.P. Pattanayak, Director, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. Apart from the valuable suggestions that he gave from time to time, he was also a source of encouragement and inspiration to us.

Our special thanks are due to the Headmasters/Head-mistresses of the selected secondary schools for their cooperation given in the collection of the data. We are also thankful to the students, their teachers and parents, who were the subject for this study. Without their help it would not have been possible to complete this work. We are also thankful to D.D.P.I., Mysore, for providing us with the detailed information about the schools.
